GWIM
 (GREATER WATERBURY INTERFAITH MINISTRIES)

Members of GWIM were advised of the need for food items, diapers, and women’s health items.  SPECIAL GWIM REQUEST:  Bottled water.  Portable food items to include plastic utensils, wash and dry hand wipes, non-microwaveable food, dried fruit.

The soup kitchen is serving about 250 persons a day.  The food pantry for the previous month gave out over 6800 meals which averages for the one day they are open at about 250 persons being served.  Volunteers are needed in many areas.  A brochure with job descriptions of the volunteer positions is being prepared and if approved at the next annual meeting will be released soon after that.

“Money Follows The Patient”:  Delegates viewed a video made by John Stango regarding bringing a family member home for care. Bill #477 is before the Legislature which, once approved, will allow patients to receive home care with Medicare reimbursement in the State of Connecticut.

The GWIM Food Pantry is open Monday from 8:30 a.m. to noon ONLY.  There is a food pantry open every day Monday through Friday—to find places and times call “211”—Infoline.

Good News Garage

Good News Garage, an affiliate of Lutheran Social Services of New England, was the first program in the nation to provide low-income families and individuals with safe and reliable cars to enable them to access jobs and other economic opportunities. Recipients use the vehicles to get to jobs and ultimately leave state assistance rolls and become financially self-sufficient. It is a fantastic program that has improved the lives of over 3,000 families New England-wide since 1996.

Good News Garage is not like other advertising car donation programs, many of which are actually for-profit liquidators. While all donations qualify for a tax deduction, Good News Garage is the only program that could offer a fair market value deduction, should your donated vehicle be awarded to a family. While nearly any vehicle can be donated, those awarded to families in need are generally 10 years old with 130,000 miles.

If you believe in the Good News Garage program and do not have a car to donate, there are several other ways to help:

Volunteer your time. We need help with: picking up donated  vehicles, light car detailing, clerical work, “Ambassadors”  who are willing to spread the name by giving talks and representing us at churches, civic groups and events; or serving on a local Program Committee.

Plan a youth service project. We can help create a volunteer project for groups of all ages and interests.

Make a charitable contribution. Your cash donation can be used in a variety of ways at your discretion, such as fixing cars for Jumpstart clients, new marketing initiatives, or overall GNG expansion opportunities.
